Eastern Mennonite University

Eastern Mennonite University (EMU) is a private, coeducational university located in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Founded in 1917 as a seminary of the Mennonite Church, EMU has grown to offer more than 80 majors and programs of study. The university is affiliated with the Mennonite Church USA, and its mission is to "educate and equip students to serve and lead in a global context."

EMU's main campus is situated on 140 acres in the heart of Harrisonburg. The campus includes two academic buildings, several residence halls, an athletic complex, a library and learning center, a student center, and multiple dining facilities. EMU also operates satellite campuses in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania; Washington D.C.; and Philadelphia.

EMU offers undergraduate degrees in business administration, education, nursing, social work, communication sciences & disorders; interdisciplinary studies; music; peacebuilding & development; science & engineering; visual & communication arts; and world languages & cultures. Graduate programs are offered in business administration (MBA), counseling psychology (MA), education (MEd), nursing (MSN), organizational leadership (MAOL), peacebuilding & development (MPD), social work (MSW); and theology & ethics (MTAE).

In addition to its rigorous academic program offerings, EMU also provides students with a variety of extracurricular activities including intramural sports such as basketball and soccer as well as clubs like the Student Government Association or the Student Peacebuilding Club. There are also student-run organizations that focus on faith-based activities such as Bible study or prayer groups.

EMU's commitment to service learning is evident through its Center for Justice & Peacebuilding which offers courses on topics such as conflict transformation or restorative justice. The university also emphasizes global engagement through study abroad opportunities. In addition to providing students with international experiences through semester-long programs around the world, EMU also has two international centers – one located in El Salvador and one in Rwanda – where students can participate in service-learning projects on site.

As part of its commitment to sustainability initiatives, EMU has implemented several green initiatives throughout its campus such as solar panel arrays for energy production or composting systems for food waste reduction. Additionally, the university has established an Office of Sustainability that works with faculty members to integrate sustainability into their courses so that students can learn about environmental issues firsthand while engaging with their local community through service projects or internships focused on sustainability topics.
